You're not making this mistake, right?

I couldn’t believe my eyes.

A few weeks ago, I took a trip down south for a trade show. (YES - trade shows still exist! I was a bit shocked, too…😜)

As I walked through the rows and rows of booths, I was, quick frankly, shocked at how bad their marketing messaging was.

The majority of the booths touted how amaaaazing their company was. All of their awards and achievements. In the story they were telling, they were definitely the heroes.

Those booths had relatively low traffic and were continually complaining about how slow the show was.

There were a few booths, though, that were packed nonstop with a queue of people.

The difference?

Instead of focusing on themselves and their accomplishments, they focused instead on their client. Their messaging directly spoke to problems their audience was having, positioning their leads as the heroes of the story and themselves as the friendly guide who helps them on their quest.

Women with linked arms

The moral of this story: remember, every person you work with is the hero of their own story. Sure, your awards and achievements can help boost your credibility…

But ultimately, the fastest way to make an authentic connection with your audience is to get down in the hole with them and show them how you can help them solve their problems.

(Oh, and if you’re exhibiting at a trade show anytime soon, I want you to know that I'm officially offering a free booth review before you go. Friends don’t let friends use bad marketing. 😉)

See you soon!
